My top 5 iphone apps

My good friend Joel Hughes recently tweeted for favourite iphone apps for his wife’s iphone (she had one for her birthday. Nice and Happy Birthday Jess). So it made me take a look at the dozens of apps that I’ve downloaded and which ones I currently use, and like.

iTalk: I know the latest iphones have a built in app for voice memos but i find it a bit non-intuitive for an Apple app and much prefer Griffin Technology’s iTalk. It’s fast to get going, simple to start and pause and has selectable recoding qualities. And the best bit; it syncs wirelessly to your mac. Now why can’t all apps do that?

Tweetdeck: For all us twits that feel the need to regularly tweet, an app for one’s iphone is an essential item. I’ve been through many during the past year and only one gets close to providing a mobile service that matches a laptop/workstation experience. What’s more, Tweetdeck is free. Go and download it and try it out.

Evernote: Anyone that doesn’t use Evernote should have their head examined. It’s one of the best web-based tools around and it’s even better when mobile. As well as saving all your great ideas when you’re out and about, you can recover all the notes you’ve saved and tagged. This app alone saves me hours of time every week in no longer having to search through scraps of paper for those important little notes.

Stanza: A new entry this past month, Stanza is more than just an ebook reader, it’s a gateway to a whole world of ebooks, including thousands of free ones. You can search, download and read ebooks straight from your iphone just as you would a Kindle (if you had one).

iSki: From this years favourite to last years favourite. iSki is a must for all ski nuts. If you’re on the piste or of to the piste you’ll need to understand the local weather conditions. If you’re stuck at home with nothing to do, iSki gives you instant access to hundreds of webcams all over the world so even when you can’t be there, you can see what you’re missing.

My Google wave invite came through the other day so I’ve signed up and now want to get working with it. Problem is, not many people have this great little tool and they can’t understand what the fuss is all about. So, if you don’t have Google Wave yet, here’s why you should get yourself an invite…

1. Google account. Not just email but integral blogger, picassa albums, Rss reader, documents and much much more. http://www.google.com

2. Thunderbird. A superior alternative to Outlook Express and, for the majority of us, just as good as Outlook. http://www.mozilla.com

3. Evernote. Keep all you notes, url’s, ideas, everything, all in one online place. works with Pc, Mac, iphone, windows mobile. http://www.evernote.com

4. WordPress. Much much more than just a great free blog. http://www.wordpress.com and http://www.wordpress.org

5. Openoffice. Why would anyone buy Microsoft Office when you can get this fully-featured word processor, spreadsheet, database, presentation and drawing package free? http://www.openoffice.org

Self hosted WordPress gets mobile app

I’m liking WordPress more every day. A recent find is the ability to publish posts remotely (like this entry), to self hosted WordPress sites (like this one). I previously thought that this was only available on WordPress hosted blogs. Happy days here.

Picassa slideshows – free and easy

Here’s something worth trying.. Picassa Slideshows..All you need is a Picassa Album (they’re free at picasa.google.com). Then add some photos to a slideshow and you’ll get a bit of code to publish to your website or blog. This took me just 5 minutes to create.
